Organisations Supporting Refugee Week in Norfolk
-
- Norfolk Education & Action for Development (NEAD)
- NEAD is an educational charity working locally for global justice and equality. Our focus on asylum and refugee issues encompasses both global and local issues. It is an area where accurate information can be hard to find and where the media are prone to scaremongering and hyperbole.
-
- Norwich Multi-Agency Forum for Asylum-Seekers and Refugees (NASREF)
- The events and activities for Refugee Week in Norfolk have been co-ordinated by John Thompson on behalf of the NASREF and member organisations. We would like to thank and acknowledge all those individuals and organisations who have come together to make it possible.
- Norwich City Council
- British Red Cross
- Norfolk Museums
- Norfolk County Council
- New Writing Partnership
- City College Norwich
- Refugee Council
A recent report from the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) found that, in Norwich people vastly overestimate the number of asylum seekers living in their community
. In fact Norwich is the only dispersal area in Norfolk and hosts just 150 asylum seekers at a time. The same report found that hostility to asylum seekers is strongest where people have little contact with asylum seekers and migrants - including Norwich.
There is clearly a local need for education and awareness-raising activities. Refugee Week with its emphasis on celebrating the positive contributions that refugees have made and continue to make to UK society and to breaking down barriers between communities provides an excellent platform to do just that.
